What you'll need
- A photograph, an object, or simply a name held in mind
- A candle or a glass of water
- A journal
The practice
- Step 1. Sit somewhere quiet and place the photograph or object in front of you.
- Step 2. Say her name aloud. Then say what you know of her.
- Step 3. Ask, silently or aloud, what she would want you to put down.
- Step 4. Write whatever arrives, without editing it.
- Step 5. Give thanks in your own words — prayer, silence, or a simple thank you.
