Sacred Night
The Water and the Week
A weekly evening bathing practice for closing one week before opening the next.
- Best time
- Sunday evening, or the last night of your working week
- Estimated duration
- 30 minutes
- Pathway
- body
What you'll need
- A bath or a shower — either works
- Salt or a handful of your usual bath product, if you like
- A clean towel set out beforehand
- Your bonnet, scarf or shower cap
- Fresh night clothes, folded and waiting
The practice
- Step 1. Set out the towel and night clothes before you start. Coming out to something ready is part of the practice.
- Step 2. Leave the phone in another room. Thirty minutes unreachable is the point.
- Step 3. As the water runs, say the week out loud — what it took, what it gave, what you are done arguing with.
- Step 4. Get in. Let the first two minutes be nothing but heat and quiet.
- Step 5. Wash without rushing. Where your hands want to linger, let them.
- Step 6. Before you drain the water or turn off the tap, say: "That week is finished. It does not follow me out."
- Step 7. Step out, dry slowly, cover your hair, dress. Do not check the phone before bed.
Atira's reflection
Atira's personal practice: I do not bring the phone in with me. Thirty minutes a week where nobody can reach me has changed more than I expected.

Safety considerations
- Keep water at a comfortable temperature and rise carefully — wet surfaces are slippery, and long hot soaks can leave you lightheaded.
- If you are pregnant, or live with heart, blood pressure, circulation, neuropathy or skin conditions, ask your own qualified professional before hot soaks, and never soak alone if fainting is a risk.
- Patch test any salt or product that is new to you. Do not use anything on broken skin.
- Bathing is comfort and ritual here, not a treatment for any condition.
