Sacred Night
Laying It Down
An evening release, so the day's weight is set down at the door instead of carried into your sleep.
- Best time
- Evening, before you prepare for bed
- Estimated duration
- 12 minutes
- Pathway
- spirit
What you'll need
- Your journal, or any single sheet of paper
- A candle, or a lamp you can turn low
- A small bowl of water, or access to a sink
- Your bonnet or scarf, set out where you can reach it
The practice
- Step 1. Dim the room. Light the candle or lower the lamp. Let the light change before you do.
- Step 2. Say out loud three things the day asked of you. Not what you achieved — what it asked.
- Step 3. Write one sentence for anything you are still holding. One line each. No explaining, no defending.
- Step 4. Place your open hand flat over the page and say: "I have carried this far enough for today."
- Step 5. Underneath, write the one thing you will pick back up tomorrow. Everything else stays on the page.
- Step 6. Close the journal. Wash your hands slowly, or rinse them in the bowl, as the women before you did at the end of long days.
- Step 7. Tie your scarf or put on your bonnet. Let that be the signal that the working day is closed.
- Step 8. Sit in the quiet for one full minute before you rise.
Atira's reflection
Atira's personal practice: releasing is not forgetting. I name what I will pick back up in the morning, and I name what I will not. The difference is the whole practice.

Safety considerations
- Never leave a lit candle unattended, and keep it away from fabric, hair products and head coverings.
- If writing brings up more than you can hold alone, stop and reach for someone you trust. Some people find it steadying to speak with a counselor or spiritual leader.
- If you are in crisis or thinking of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number, right away.
- This is a reflective practice, not treatment for sleep difficulties or any medical or mental health condition.
