Catching the Sentence

To notice the sentence you repeat to yourself under pressure, and to answer it with your own voice.

Best time
Midday, or after a difficult exchange
Estimated duration
7 minutes
Pathway
mind

What you'll need

  • A journal or your phone's notes

The practice

  1. Step 1. Write down the exact sentence running through your mind. Word for word.
  2. Step 2. Ask: whose voice is this? Where did I first hear it?
  3. Step 3. Ask: is this the whole truth, or one tired part of it?
  4. Step 4. Write a second sentence — not a denial, but something truer.
  5. Step 5. Read the second sentence aloud twice.

Atira's reflection

Atira's personal practice: I do not argue with the first sentence anymore. I just refuse to let it be the last one.
