Great Rising
The First Word
To choose the first words spoken over your day, before the world offers you its own.
- Best time
- The first five minutes of the morning
- Estimated duration
- 5 minutes
- Pathway
- spirit
What you'll need
- Your own voice
- Optional: a card or paper where you keep the words
The practice
- Step 1. Before you speak to anyone — including the phone — stand still wherever you are.
- Step 2. Take one breath in through the nose and let it out through the mouth, audibly.
- Step 3. Say out loud: "I am here. I am not late to my own life."
- Step 4. Then say one true sentence about today, chosen by you: what you are protecting, what you are refusing, what you are hoping for.
- Step 5. If a prayer, a psalm, a line from an elder or a song belongs here for you, say that instead. The words should be yours.
- Step 6. Say it a second time, quieter, and then begin your day.
Atira's reflection
Atira's personal practice: I speak it out loud, in my own voice, in my own kitchen. Something in the body believes a spoken word differently than a thought one.

Safety considerations
- Spoken words are reflection, not treatment, and they do not cause or cure illness or circumstance.
- On hard mornings the honest sentence may be small. Small is allowed.
