Great Rising

First Light

To meet the morning as yourself — before the phone, before anyone else's needs, before the day names you.

What you'll need

  • A glass of water, poured the night before if that helps
  • A window, doorway or porch — any place daylight reaches you
  • Your bonnet or scarf, to remove slowly rather than in a rush
  • Optional: one song you can play low

The practice

  1. Step 1. Before you reach for the phone, sit up and place both feet flat on the floor. Let them stay there while you take three unhurried breaths.
  2. Step 2. Take off your bonnet or scarf slowly. Run your hands over your hair or scalp once, the way you would touch someone you love.
  3. Step 3. Drink your water standing at the light. Notice the temperature. Do not rush it.
  4. Step 4. Let your eyes rest on one living thing — sky, a tree, a plant on the sill — for as long as it takes to breathe five times.
  5. Step 5. Say your own name out loud. Then one sentence about how you would like to move through this day: "Slowly today." "Gently today." "Honestly today."
  6. Step 6. Stretch in whatever direction your body asks for. Roll the shoulders back. Let the jaw drop open once.
  7. Step 7. Only then pick up the phone — if you pick it up at all.

Atira's reflection

Atira's personal practice: I stopped letting the phone speak first. Some mornings the whole practice is my feet on the floor and the words "slowly today." That counts. That has always counted.

Safety considerations

  • Rise slowly if you ever feel lightheaded when standing; sit back down and let it pass.
  • This is a practice of attention, not a treatment for anything. It is not a substitute for care from a qualified professional.
  • Some mornings there is no ten minutes. Two breaths and your feet on the floor is the whole practice on those days.
