Boundaries
The Clean No
To practice declining without over-explaining, apologizing, or negotiating against yourself.
- Best time
- Before a conversation you are dreading
- Estimated duration
- 10 minutes
- Pathway
- mind
What you'll need
- A journal
- Optional: a mirror
The practice
- Step 1. Name the request you want to decline.
- Step 2. Write the no in one sentence. No reasons attached.
- Step 3. Read it aloud. Notice the urge to soften it, and leave it as it is.
- Step 4. Write what you fear will happen. Then write what you would like to protect.
- Step 5. Choose when and how you will say it.
Atira's reflection
Atira's personal practice: a boundary spoken calmly is not an act of harm. Some people find it easier to practice out loud first.

Safety considerations
- If naming a boundary would put you at risk of harm, your safety comes first. Reach out to a trusted person or a local support service.
